Prescription vs Over-the-Counter in Qatar: What You Can Buy Without a Doctor's Note
Prescription vs Over-the-Counter in Qatar: What You Can Buy Without a Doctor's Note
Qatar has clear rules about which medicines you can buy directly from a pharmacy and which need a doctor's prescription first. Knowing the difference saves you a wasted trip and helps you understand why some items on our shelves are available to order instantly while others aren't.
What "Prescription Only" actually means
Prescription-only medicines (often abbreviated POM) are products a doctor has determined need medical supervision - because of dosage strength, potential side effects, interactions with other medicines, or the condition being treated. On sunlife.qa, these products are clearly labelled, and you'll be asked to upload a valid prescription at checkout before the order can be processed.
What's available over the counter
Many everyday health needs don't require a prescription at all. Common examples include:
- Pain and fever relief, such as Panadol Advance
- Sore throat lozenges, such as Strepsils Honey & Lemon
- Cold symptom relief, such as Vicks VapoRub
- Basic first aid items, like adhesive plasters and antiseptics
These can be ordered directly, with no prescription upload needed at checkout.
Why the distinction matters
This isn't about making things harder - it's a safety system. Some medicines carry real risks if taken without medical supervision: wrong dosing, dangerous interactions with other medications, or masking symptoms of a condition that needs proper diagnosis. The prescription requirement is one of the ways a MoPH-licensed pharmacy protects customers, in Qatar as in any regulated market.
