Wound Care 101: Choosing the Right Dressing or Plaster for Every Cut
Not every cut needs the same treatment. A small kitchen nick, a child's grazed knee, and a minor burn each call for a different kind of dressing - and choosing the right one helps the wound heal faster and more comfortably.
Everyday cuts and scrapes
For small, shallow cuts, a simple adhesive plaster is usually enough once the wound is clean. A box of Medica Adhesive Band Aid covers most everyday nicks and scrapes, protecting the area from dirt and friction while it heals.
Larger or deeper wounds
For bigger cuts or wounds that need more coverage, a sterile wound dressing pad offers better protection than a small plaster alone, and can be secured in place with tape or a bandage. These are worth keeping on hand separately from your everyday plasters, since they're sized differently and used for more significant wounds.
Burns need different care
Minor burns - a touch from a hot pan, a splash of boiling water - shouldn't be treated the same way as cuts. A specialist burn dressing, such as Burn Stop Dressing, is designed to cool and protect burned skin, and a soothing ointment like Beesline Burn Healing Ointment can support healing once the burn has cooled. Never apply ice directly to a burn, and never apply butter, oil, or toothpaste - these are common home remedies that can actually make a burn worse.
Keeping the wound clean
Whatever the injury, clean the area gently with water before dressing it, and change the dressing regularly, especially if it becomes wet or dirty. Watch for signs of infection - increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus - which mean it's time to see a doctor rather than continue self-care.
When to seek medical care
See a doctor for deep cuts that won't stop bleeding, wounds with embedded debris, burns larger than a few centimetres or on the face/hands/joints, or any wound showing signs of infection. For everything else, a well-stocked dressing drawer at home covers most day-to-day bumps and scrapes.
